Earlier this week Tropical Depression #2 formed off the coast of Africa as the Cape Verde hurricane season kicks into high gear. Cooler than normal water temperatures caused by upwelling off the coast of Africa have prevented any significant development until now. That system quickly lost depression status as convection waned, cooler water temperatures and easterly shear too it's toll. But overnight it regenerated and is now the first named system of the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Tropical Storm Ana. Long-range models have this one skirting the north coast of Puerto Rico is a couple of days and then setting it's course on S. Florida next Thursday. This is one to watch, because it has the potential to send us both a healthy dose of SE ground swell and some solid wind towards the end of the coming week.

Behind that, Tropical Depression #3 is hot on it's heels, and has the potential to become Hurricane Bill, following a similar track to Ana. The latest forecasts have Bill at close to major hurricane status as it approaches the islands mid-week. It could potentially take a more northerly track after that, putting it smack in the middle of our swell window for a series of back to back ground swells. This is what we have been waiting for all summer. Let's hope that these storms cruise by nicely, creating some solid swell and wind, and no carnage for our area! BRING IT ON (word)

AWSOME! We need the wind before we all go mad!

A word of caution.....We all saw what happened to that guy in Ft Laud. If you sail in stronger conditions be careful. Also I would guess Huguenot Park will have more surfers if the swell is good. Because of the Navy debris and posted area near the jetty and because of the new break near the north end of the beach expect more surfers up there. Remember we are all hungry for good conditions. Keep a sharp eye out for surfers and don't kite through them or jump up wind of them. Two time your lines is the minimum distance. There is a whole ocean out there. The season for baby bird protection is almost over and driving will be opened up in about two weeks for the rest of the point. The backside is open now. There are some areas of loose sand up there. Until the wind blows it off the top it will be easy to get stuck. Be careful driving out there. See you on the beach!
