If you have an iPhone, this might appeal to you.
I haven't used a wind meter in over 3 years... but.....

iPhones and similarly powerful hand-helds are changing the way the world does things on a daily basis. Now you can find the wind speed before you go out on the water, golf course or whatever activity you choose. It just keeps getting better.
The "Wind Meter" Application for iPhone was developed by a start-up group of young engineers in Silicon Valley who happen to enjoy Wind Sports and solving technical problems. They were the first to come up with this concept of using the iPhone microphone for detecting wind speed about 6 months ago and began working with the necessary sound conversions, algorithms and programmers. It has taken a considerable amount of testing time and program up-dating for this device to give good approximate wind readings. We could not help but appreciate the idea of having a wind meter that gives good approximate readings and a phone all in one device. We believe that the wind meter is really a fun gadget, but also has many practical uses in many activities where wind is a factor.
Derive approximate wind velocity for a multitude of recreational uses such as, sailing, boating, kite surfing, wind surfing, golf, disc golf, track & field, hunting, fishing, small kite flying, RC model plane flying and many others. However, this application is not meant to take the place of scientific instrumentation where precise wind speed readings are required.
KiteLife Magazine has stated: "In our own field tests here at Kitelife, we found that in a relatively consistent wind speed of 3-28 mph, the Wind Meter app was surprisingly accurate." In our own tests here at GoingAPPS, we have found that the "Wind Meter" also shows very similar speeds to those represented by commercial grade anemometers. The "Wind Meter" is in the top 10 selling Weather apps at Apple I tunes.
This is a fun app and a useful tool for only .78 Euro or .99 cents US... but please do not be deterred by the inexpensive nature of this application, it is just conforming to the application world market these days.
