If you have not been to Utah in winter, suffice it to say that the license plates read "The Greatest Snow on Earth". Don't believe me? Check out the video from my last trip where we got 6 feet of snow in just 1 week: http://www.vtrip.tv

We are planning a snow kite trip for the end of February of beginning of March. The Superfly Open snow kiting event is at Powder Mountain again the 2nd week of March, but we are not tied to those dates. What we need is a crew to head out and tear up some snow with us. If you are interested please send me a private message here and I will put your email on the list. Here is more info:

Been wanting to snow kite from the beginning, still haven't made it out. Seems like imminent death, but eh what the hell!

Believe it or not, snow kiting is actually easier to learn that kiteboarding on the water. The reason for this is that you can launch a smaller kite, because you do not need to have enough speed to plane out. As with kite landboarding, you can go slow to start with, and move up to a larger more powerful kite as your skills and confidence progress.

The dedicated snow kiting are at Powder Mountain is perfect because it is wide open with few trees, and not very steep. The dominant SW wind direction is funneled from the valley up the hill to the ridge where you kite, so the wind is typically very steady for the mountains. Here is a trail map of Powder Mountain, where you can see the Sunrise T-Bar on the upper left that takes you to the snow kiting area:

Here is some more information on Snow Kiting at Powder Mountain. Snow kite passes are $20 for the day:

The dates for the 2010 Utah Superfly Open at Powder Mountain have been confirmed. The event will be March 11-14, 2010. We are still awaiting details on accomodations near the mountain, and as soon as we have more info we will post it here. Quite a few people have expressed interest in this year's trip, so hopefully we will gather up a posse and hit the hills together!

I lived in northern Utah during the winter of 1994/1995, which was also an El Nino year. We experienced a 50 year record snowfall of 840 inches in one season, which is about 340 inches above the average annual snowfall at several of Utah's top resorts, including Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, and Powder Mountain. To give you something to compare to, most resorts in Colorado average about 300 inches of snowfall per year. On a good year Utah gets absolutely DUMPED ON!!!

I have been back every spring since then for a week or so, and March is by far my favorite time of year. The snow is light and dry in Utah, so it takes a few months for it to pile up and cover all of the rocks early season. Then in March you start to get the spring storms, and the storm track is typically more active. Also the sun starts to get higher in the sky, so it is typically warmer during the day when the sun comes out. You can typically expect 2-3 sunny days in between each storm, which is when the kiting is best. Please email me if you are interested:

This year's Third Annual Super Fly Open could be epic.

If you haven't snowkited...what are you waiting for?

Any updates on the Powder Mountain Utah trip?

It is starting to look more like Utah. They got off to a late start, but it only takes a couple of 40 inch dumps to get right back to the typical Utah winter. By March there will be PLENTY of snow!

Just signed up!!!

http://www.superflyopen.com

Bring as much of a quiver/kite range as you can...and your harness and board.
Leave your wetsuit at home.

2008 SuperFly had a strong wind day Friday (22-35K), then a light wind day Saturday (10-15K) then a mid-range wind Sunday (15-22K).

So it can be quite a range of conditions...and can be gusty.

OHHHHBOOY oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy!!!!

MoFat - 2 weeks!?!? That's nice!

TNT - wives and GF at own risk. I know how 'never been skiing or snowboarding before' can lead to a very long (or very short) day on the mountain...then throw kiting into it?
Actually, trainer kites are usually up, so she (or he) can do that...spectators hanging out during the day, not just kiting, could take lessons on ski/snowboarding on the Powder Mtn bunny slope too so why not bring the better half? (Then again, my wife knows better and is taking a pass on this trip)
Nightly parties usually...Is there another Best Girl Competition this year?
I would get a rental car/4x4...the shuttle service was ok, but spotty, and can be tough when you have a bunch of gear/quiver to haul around.

We rented a 4x4 Subaru wagon last time for like $300/month. Shop around and you can find a great deal on flights and rental car. There may be opportunity to check out some other spots as well, so you will want a vehicle.
