The great thing about Stand Up Paddle Surfing is that anyone can do it. I have taught several guys over the past few weeks that have virtually no surfing experience, and by the end of a 2 hour session they were actually riding waves. Nat has a little bit of surfing experience, but not much at all. Anyone who surfs knows that it takes a LONG time to get proficient at catching waves laying down, and then standing up and riding the wave for any length of time. Want to go from never surfing and ripping off the lips, and you have to live near the beach and dedicated YEARS to the ocean.

Yes, Nat did have a couple of good wipeouts, but so did I! The waves were hollow and pounding on a knee deep sand bar, which is not the most ideal conditions for SUP. I was considering going in and getting my fish surfboard towards the end! But I also saw Nat get a couple of really nice waves and ride them for 25 yards or so. That is pretty good for first time ever on a SUP, and an 11' board at that!

The thing I think that makes the difference with SUP is that you can standup without catching a wave, and gain confidence in your balance and skills maneuvering the board before you ever think about surfing. A big part of the game whether kiteboarding, surfing or SUP is getting your head straight. 90% of the time the thought that goes through my mind the second before I fall is "Oh shit, I am going to fall!" The thing that makes a great athlete is being able to deal with a difficult situation and keep the state of mind that says "No problem, I got this!"

I can't believe you didn't post the photo of me demonstrating the perfect SUP style.
Hey, so what if the board was a couple of feet away.
I looked good - YEAH.............
