Halloween is on a Sunday this year, which is perfect for the Halloween Blast kiteboarding event. Last year the event was cancelled due to lack of wind, but it went off 2 years in a row for 2007 and 2008. While Ocean Extreme sports is located here in St. Augustine, this event has never really been about the shop. The Halloween Blast is about getting kiters together from all over the southeast to ride and have fun.
In the interest of making the event more inclusive no matter where you buy your gear, or what brand of kite or board you choose to ride, I would like to open a discussion on what can be done to make the event better this year. In the past, only a few individuals have put any time and energy into making this event a reality. Since the event is open to everyone, anyone is welcome to be involved in the planning and production process.
This year's event is going to be a little different because there is NO DRIVING ALLOWED on the north side of Matanzas. That means that riders will have to either setup and launch on the south side of Matanzas and tack upwind, or setup at the beach ramp on the north side and ride downwind to the inlet.
El Nino is on it's way out, and we are hoping for a La Nina pattern to unfold over the next few months.
Check out the graph for October 2007, which was the last La Nina year.
