Extreme Kites owner Daryl Drown made the trek out west to Powder Mountain, Utah on Thursday to compete in the Superfly Open for the second year in a row. After a couple of light wind days, yesterday was 10-22 from the south. I got a report from Daryl last night.

Daryl led the boardercross race (on skis) for most of the race through a challenging course that led racers down into a valley with a wind shadow that required the riders to keep their apparent speed to keep the kite in the air. Towards the end of the race, Daryl crashed his kite, and ended up in 4th place.

The good news is that Daryl won the big air event with a crossed up triple kite loop. We are hoping to get some video and photos later this week! Anyone that knows Daryl knows that he was a professional skier in a past life on the Extreme Skiing Tour, as well as a ski patroller at Copper Mountain, Colorado. It looks like his past skiing experience paid off!

A triple kite loop is what you do when you are trying to get back down to the slope after boosting 80 feet in the air off a kicker. In the snow, the hill goes away from you, so if you just keep flying your kite forwards, you will keep going up and out. Kite loops bring you back towards the slope, and help you eventually land after 8-10 seconds of hang time, or MORE. (jump)
